Things went horribly wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not Very bad really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
In the end, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You question about the nature of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck without warning, ravaging entire cities in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like sandcastles, and the screams that ensued was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath debris, their fate unknown. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to confront a future forever altered.

Awful Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't figure it to look presentable. As I was hurrying out the door, I trippedover and spilled all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for school.
I with no time to spare. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. was a catastrophe. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
